India’s financial capital – Mumbai is an Island city that covers a total area of 603.4 sq. km.  while its suburban extension spans 370 sq. km.  totaling to 437.71 sq. km. which comes under the governance of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).

We are aware of how fast-paced the city of Mumbai can get, with total chaos from office-goers commuting up and down every single day. Only a lucky few have the opportunity to stay within a 4-5 km radius from their workplace. Others may have to travel by crowded trains for 1-2 hours (one way) or take the cramped highway route which always seems to delay your clock-in time.

However, all doesn’t seem gloomy, as positive strides are taking place with a surge in Infrastructure projects within the city. There are a couple of projects in the pipeline that will be a game changer for urbanites and through this Blog, we aim to highlight the following;

1 Mumbai Metro Project

The Mumbai Metro Line 14 is a massive-scale Mass Rapid Transit System project that was initiated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Governance on January 19, 2023. The 14 new Metro Lines will cover a total distance of 350 kilometers, to improve connectivity and reduce traffic jams on the road. Can you guestimate how much money was allocated to implement the Mumbai Metro project? Well, according to news reports, this infrastructure project costs a whooping INR 12,600 crores and will be completed within a span of 10 years time. Basically, all of Mumbai’s main localities will be well-connected including; Andheri West, Colaba, Dahisar, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli, Kanjurmarg, Badlapur etc. It is likely that Metro travel will increase the demand for housing projects within the city, as home seekers won’t mind opting to purchase homes in newly developed luxury complexes in suburban areas, as the distance time between office and home will be considerably reduced.

2 Mumbai Trans-Harbor Sea Link

The first thought of having to travel from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai is sure to elicit a cringe-worthy expression! However, with the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Sea Link project, a 21.8 km long bridge will be constructed to join the two areas which are poles apart from each other. It will also set a new record, by being India’s first ‘six-lane’ sea bridge – the longest one until year 2023. Abbreviated as MTHL, the bridge will have its entry point at Sewri (a mini sea port along the eastern edge of South Mumbai), cross the Thane Creek to the North of Elephant Island (Elephanta Caves), and end at Chirle village close to Nhava Sheva (also called as Jawaharlal Nehru Port). Further, the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the Mumbai-Goa Highway will be directly connected with the exit at Nhava Sheva, such that commuters traveling out of town may also benefit from the newly launched MTHL. It will be convenient for homeowners who have purchased a luxury apartment in Panvel’s high-rise modern towers to be able to make the most of luxurious living and maintain a good work-life balance, at the same time.

3 Navi-Mumbai International Airport

The Panvel & Ulwe, Navi Mumbai International Airport is seeing rapid construction with a 4-phase master plan to welcome over 60 million passengers annually, once it is ready. The much-talked-about Airport will be inaugurated and prepared for operations by August 2024. The total area of the project comprises 1,160 hectares and the estimated cost for the same, is around 16,700 crore. The design and architectural layouts have been handled by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), while the Civil Construction work is bestowed upon Larsen & Toubro. A short distance from the new Navi Mumbai Airport will be a hub of bustling activities and residential complexes covering an expanse of 300 hectares, which is termed as ‘Aerocity’. Wondering how to get to the new airport already? Well, worry not! It will be interconnected to the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport by an express Metro Line and passengers can board the high-speed Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Bullet Train, to get off at the Navi Mumbai Airport station. Apart from this, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) will also have a separate stop for travelers to board off at the Airport junction. We can’t wait to witness all the action on the runway, and the planned township around it will surely give a boost to more home buyers seeking modern apartments for sale in Mumbai.

4 Coastal Road Project

There have been several attempts to connect South Mumbai to the Suburbs, but the travel time never seems to be reduced, even after the Bandra Worli Sea Link came into existence. However, our smart Samaritans have now planned to extend the Sea Link further on both sides to make road travel a joyful journey. The 22 km long coastal road will soon connect Marine Lines (South Mumbai) to Kandivali (Western Suburb). The time to reach Kandivali will reduce from 2 hours to merely 40 minutes, along this scenic route. This infrastructure project is well worth the cost of 12,000 crores and work is expected to be finished by November 2023. The first 10-km segment runs from Princess Street Flyover at Marine lines to BKC. From Bandra, the flyover further extends to Versova, as a part of the second phase. A combination of tunnels, bridges, flyovers, and elevated roads, will pave the way for a path-breaking infrastructure. Beautification of the Coastal Road is a part of the project, as a good portion will be dedicated to cycling paths, building a seaside promenades, positioning an outdoor theatre, cycling tracks & playgrounds around the coastal route.
